Emission SpectroscopySpectroscopy is the technique of vaporizing a small portion of
sample in an electric arc, dispersing the resultant light into its component wavelengths,
exposing a photosensitive plate or film to this light, and then comparing the
developed plate with a standard to determine the concentration of the various
elements present in the standard. Our services in this area fall mainly into two categories: trace impurities in Pure Metals and alloys, and Semi-Quantitative Analysis of powdered materials.
A. Pure Metals Standards are available for a variety of pure metals. Impurities reported generally follow the ASTM specifications for that metal. In some cases where no certified standards are available it is possible to relate to standards of another element which exhibits similar behavior in the arc.
